A book review by Sheri L. Ziemann
By Kevin Raftery and Kim Gilbert Raftery; Illustrated by Jim M'Guiness. 87 pages; Klutz Press, Palo Alto, California
While considering the gardeners on your gift-giving list, don't forget the little ones! Geared toward kids six years old and up, with parent assistance, KidsGardening is a real find. If you are an avid gardener and have kids, they probably get right out there with you and “help.” If you know someone with kids, or lave lots of nieces and nephews, as this reviewer does, you may also know children who know little or nothing about gardening.
Whether for seasoned young gardeners or novices, KidsGardening tells all about growing things in a fun, exciting way. Packaged with a small trowel and some seed packets, kids and adults alike will find themselves rolling up their sleeves and messing around in the dirt once they've cracked this book. The illustrations are hilarious, showing, for example, the gophers' underground dining table set up conveniently below a ripe radish, or a bunny clinging possessively to the carrot a young gardener has just pulled out of the ground!
Sections include, “What plants need to grow,” “how to make compost,” “Garden pests and friends” and recipes for roasted pumpkin seeds and even fresh pickles. Each “how-to-plant” section features container as well as in-ground instructions, so urban dwellers aren't left out.
One note-kids are urged to taste their produce right in the garden. While pest control is approached within the book the non-toxic way, this mom prefers at least a trip to the garden hose before tasting! At any rate, the book softly suggests a grown-up assistant, so you can provide your own guidance. The gift of your time, along with the book, will be a treasure that special child in your life will remember always.
KidsGardening can be found at your local garden center or bookstore, or you may call Klutz Press at (415) 857-0888 to order by mail.
